Chair, Denise Shook opened the meeting and then conducted the proceedings.

Attendees: Denise Shook, John Reichlein, Judy Reichlein, Ivan Schmidt, Pete Jacobsen, Ron Sumner, Margie Sumner, Carolyn Thurman, Mary Davis, Paul Rinehart, Dick Hazeltine, Opal Hazeltine, Jill Robbins, Mary Miller, Matthew Evans, Margo, Alice Stickney, Daniel Garcia, Jim White, Carol Uhte, Don Webb, Fifi Webb, Nina Gardner, Stephen Gandy, Rebecca Chung, Michael Chung, Malcolm Hancock, & Susan Hancock

I would like to extend a quick thank you to Malcolm and Susan Hancock for hosting the August meeting of the BDNA at their lovely home.

Treasurer’s Report:  Postponed until next meeting since Treasurer Rebecca Kottler was not present.

Police Report: Officer Gandy reported that Part 1 crimes are down 20% for the SE precinct.

Don and Fifi Webb were presented with a certificate of appreciation for their leadership in the neighborhood Foot Patrol, which until its recent disbandment had helped make our neighborhood safer for all its residents.

ROSE Report: Mary Davis presenting.  On Sept. 25th at 8am ROSE will be hosting a breakfast event at OMSI.  City Councilman Nick Fish will be speaking at the event.  There will also be a presentation by a resident who purchased one of the new Lents Bungalows.  Check your mailbox for your invitation.

Peter Jacobsen has moved out of the Brentwood neighborhood and into a new home in Woodstock.  He will gradually hand out his duties as webmaster to other members of the BDNA.  These duties include updating the website and taking and responding to emails from bdnaquestion@gmail.com.  Pete let us know that SE Uplift now has its website up and running at www.southeastuplift.org.  Brentwood Darlington has a section on the website including a link to the BDNA website.  The directory of local businesses has hit a stand still.  Ron and Pete will decide what future actions will be taken with this project.

Friends of Trees: Paul Rinehart presented.  Paul has begun canvassing for the fall season.  Anyone interested in helping out should contact Paul.

Yard Sale: Jill Robbins announced that the yard sale raised a total of $300.  This year there was more interest in neighbors hosting their own sale than last year.

Ron Sumner and others helped spread bark dust in Hazeltine Park.  Parks workers also lent a hand with the spreading.

Ron Sumner passed out an updated recognition nomination procedure form.  Anyone interested in nominating someone for recognition should obtain a form from Ron.

Ron Sumner made a motion to drop Joshua Green from the Board due to lack of attendance at monthly meetings.
Motion seconded.
Motion passed.

Public Safety Report:  Dick Hazeltine presenting.  There has been a graffiti problem in Hazeltine Park.  Dick asked members to go by and take pictures in order to show Officer Gandy so he can possibly identify the culprit.  Officer Gandy can be reached by email at sgandy@portlandpolice.org.  Dick stated the need for us to report volunteers hours worked in Hazeltine Park to the city.  Mr. Hazeltine attended a meeting at the SE Precinct.  The focus of the meeting was stalking, which carries a lifetime restraining order for those convicted of the crime.  We are still looking for donations to fund the purchase of children’s playground equipment in Hazeltine Park.  Matthew Evans expressed interest in finding a donor.  The city will match funds if the donation is large enough.

Barry Diggs thanked the board for our letter of recognition for his service as chair of the BDNA.  Barry proposed a letter of recognition or award for Havla (last name unknown).  It was stated that the BDNA had already presented her with an award.  Barry will research whether she has been recognized and then present at next months meeting.

Symphony in the Park (8/23):  the BDNA is looking for volunteers to man our booth.  Denise Shook distributed fliers for members to post in their area to advertise the event.

Daniel Garcia with Resolutions NW: Daniel requested some time on the September agenda.  His organization has a contract with the City of Portland to provide mediation for all the neighborhood associations.  They also facilitate neighbor agreements such as the one in place for the day laborer site located at E Burnside Street and MLK Boulevard.  Daniel also expressed concerns about graffiti at Woodmere Elementary School and sees many opportunities for youth mentoring in the area.  He thought it would be a good idea if we were to organize a shuttle bus to transport kids to Symphony in the Park.

Matthew Evans spoke about his work placing flower and herb baskets on 72nd Ave. and at other locations in the neighborhood.  He is seeking time, tools, and money for this project and would like to be put on the agenda for next month’s meeting.  He is looking to possibly organize an event where people gather at the Brentwood Community Center and build baskets to be hung around the neighborhood.  Jill Robbins raised the question of whether hanging baskets on telephone poles is legal.

There was a Motion to provide Matthew Evans with $250 for his project.
There was then a Motion to table this motion until the next meeting so Matthew could research the legalities of hanging baskets on telephone poles.
Motion Seconded.
Motion Passed.

Jim White raised concerns with the house at 5532 SE Flavel St.  This house’s tenants have been evicted, but the landlord continues to allow unsavory tenants to occupy the house.  Denise Shook referred Jim to the Office of Neighborhood Involvement.  This organization forces slumlords to clean up their act or suffer serious consequences.

Metro is sponsoring waste disposal 8/22 and 8/23 at Marshall High School.  They will be taking toxic materials.

Mt. Tabor Park is taking recommendations about how to renovate their aging facilities; specifically the Central Station and Nursery.

There was a motion to print more BDNA brochures
Motion Seconded.
Motion Passed
